Frequently Asked Questions about Specialist

What is Tribes?
Starsiege Tribes is a multiplayer online first-person shooter. For more information see TribesPlayers.com.

What is a mod?
A mod is a modification of the original Tribes game which changes the game in any number of ways.

Why is it called the Specialist mod?
Because the mod is focused on various "specialist" roles that you can play including the Demolitions specialist or the Fallout (chemical weapons and nuclear by-products) specialist.

Why did Prototype i develop the Specialist mod?
We love Tribes. It's fun. We also enjoy some of the game elements introduced by other mods, especially Renegades. But there was always this "wish list" of things we wished we could fix, modify, or add. And the more people we talked to, the more people agreed and contributed more ideas. So we finally sat down and made it.

Where can I play the Specialist mod?
You can play the Specialist mod on the Og server or any other server running the Specialist mod.

Do I need to download anything to play Specialist?
No. Specialist was designed to be played without any additional downloads.

How can I run a Specialist server?
First, you must download the Specialist server component from the Downloads section. Then install it according to the instructions, and start it up! You can also change the configuration to suit your needs.

What are these "specialist" classes?
Like the Renegades or Shifter mods, your class is determined by the armor you are wearing. There are 9 classes in Specialist: Artillery, Assault, Commander, Demolitions, Engineer, Espionage, Fallout, Infantry, and Recon. Each specializes in particular tasks and in the use of certain tools. But unlike other mods, your class does not restrict you to one type of grenade or beacon; rather you can carry different mixed types. See the Armor section of the Guide for more information.

What kind of tools and weapons are there?
There are many kinds. For example, the Demolitions specialist can plant explosives and use a Remote Detonator to trigger them from a distance. The Fallout specialist uses radiation and chemical weapons such as acid or poison gas. The Recon specialist can do precision sniping with a sniper rifle, knocking the flag off of someone's back or beacons off of their belt. See the Weapons section of the Guide for more information.

I'm interested in the Engineer specialist. What kinds of deployables are there?
Many. Most of the turrets you know and love are all here: Ion, Plasma, Rocket, Indoor, ELF, etc. There are also new turrets such as the Flak Turret for anti-air defense, the Chain turret for punishing those who dare enter your base, and the Flame Turret for roasting opponents.
Do you hate those maps where the generators are too vulnerable? Deploy a Backup Generator to take over when your primary power source is destroyed.
Is your flag too vulnerable? Deploy a new Flag Stand and move your flag.
Wish you knew when someone comes through your roof defenses? Deploy an Alarm in key areas to alert you when the reds are coming in.
See the Turrets and Deployables sections of the Guide for more information.

What are these "new useful vehicles"?
Vehicles are now much more useful. Park a Tank on a hill overlooking the enemy base and start shelling their defenses. Load up a Cargo Vehicle with useful equipment, and fly it over to a remote location to set up a remote supply center. Some vehicles are well-armored, and a couple are even shielded, making them contribute much more to the battlefield strategy. See the Vehicles section of the Guide for more information.

Why is the Commander so slow?
The Commander is not a very mobile armor. It is designed with protection in mind, and as a result it sacrifices speed.

Why doesn't the Infiltrator pack work for me?
Using the Infiltrator pack requires practice and experience. If you are trying to move through a solid object, that object must be thin enough to allow it. Finding the "weak spots" in buildings takes practice. Also, it helps to aim a little higher than straight ahead, so that it doesn't try to throw you partially into the ground.

Why don't my grenades explode when I throw them?
Because you don't have any cores in your grenades. Grenades are just a detonation and delivery device; cores are the payload.

What are "cores"?
Cores are the payload for grenades, mines, and beacons. Be sure to buy cores for your grenades, mines, and beacons, or they will be ineffective. When you throw a grenade or mine, or when you deploy a beacon, you will automatically use a core that you have. But if you have more than one type of core (e.g. EMP Grenade Core and Incendiary Grenade Core), you can use the Options menu to specify which one you want to be using.

Why does my screen stay red for so long sometimes?
Because you've been blinded. See the Blind effect for more information.

When I respawn, I can't mount a weapon, and there is a "shield" effect following me around; why?
This is an effect created by Dynamix for the Plus mod. It provides you with a couple of seconds of invulnerability when you respawn.
